DIDO AND AENEAS
Coming up in the 2023/24 season.
In September we will be starting work on this fantastic baroque opera by Henry Purcell. Another new adventure for the choir will see us learning some of the most beautiful and dramatic music of the 17th Century. A tragic tale, first told in Virgil’s Aeneid and later by Christopher Marlow, is of a Phoenician queen and the hero Aeneas recently fled from Troy. Their love is doomed when Aeneas is forced by the Gods to leave and follow his true destiny in order to found Rome. Left bereft, furious and pursued by unwelcome advances from the king of a neighbouring kingdom, Dido feels she has no choice but to take her own life.Alongside the opera project we are aiming to put on a community style carol event at Christmas.
Works being considered for later in the season include Mozart’s exquisite Laudate Dominum and another glorious song of praise by Peteris Vasks scored for choir and organ.
If you’re interested in joining us for the new season we will be holding an open rehearsal on 25th September, a great opportunity to meet the choir or send us a message.
